Felsina Chianti Classico Riserva Rancia 2006 Product #23167 (In Stock)
Felsina Chianti Classico Riserva Rancia 2006 Felsina Chianti Classico Riserva Rancia 2006

With Fontodi’s Cru Sorbo, a single vineyard Chianti that defines the heights quality can reach in this ancient wine region.  But unlike Cru Sorbo, Rancia is 100% Sangiovese, which it makes it more like
Fontodi’s Flaccianello - 100% Sangiovese, dark, a little brooding, muscular, and very deep and reserved young.  You can get glimpses of the quality now, but this really needs 3-4  years more cellaring to sing.  The price is stunning for a wine of this quality.

“If you were to cut proprietor Giuseppe Mazzocolin’s veins the man would bleed Sangiovese, such is his passion for Tuscany’s most important native grape. Mazzocolin has a terrific set of new releases on his hands. The 2006s are glorious and benefit from a warm growing season that also saw good alternation of day and evening temperatures before the grapes got a final kick of heat that informs the wines. The 2006 Chianti Classico Riserva Rancia is a vibrant, focused wine that flows with the essence of dark fruit, minerals and flowers. The wine possesses gorgeous length and proportion, all of which is framed by powerful yet well-integrated tannins. Simply put, this is a superb Chianti that also happens to be one of the best relative values in fine, age worthy wine. The Rancia is made from vines planted on poor soils at 420 meters above sea level. In 2006, the Rancia spent 16 months in French oak, of which 60% was new. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2026.”Wine Advocate 95 points

Felsina Chianti Classico Riserva Rancia 1994 Product #23007 (In Stock)
Felsina Chianti Classico Riserva Rancia 1994 Felsina Chianti Classico Riserva Rancia 1994

A few years ago, a change in importers left dribs and drabs of some of Felsina’s wines lingering in the old importer’s temperature-controlled warehouse.  We were excited to find that these stocks included just under 5 cases of the 1994 Rancia!  Tasted at the store, we found a beautiful, fully mature, Chianti.  There’s still black cherry fruit at the wine’s core, but it’s become silky and loaded with sandlewood and spice to go with the ripe fruit.  Notes of rose petal and forest floor emerge with time - an elegant wine that’s showing maturity, but still zippy and fresh on the finish.  The 2006 is a better wine than the 1994, but his will give you a hint of what to expect from Rancia at 16 years of age.

Number 54 on Wine Spectator Top 100 for 1997. “This is a beautifully crafted Chianti with impressive berry, cherry and vanilla aromas and flavors. Full-bodied, with wonderfully integrated tannins, a long and silky finish. Best after 1998.”Wine Spectator 92 points

Fontodi Vigna Del Sorba Cc Riserva 2000 Product #23107 (In Stock)

"This estate more than held its own in the trying 2000 vintage, as the 2000 Chianti Classico Riserva Vigna del Sorbo reveals. Darker in color than the regular Chianti Classico bottling, its smoky nose of berry and currant fruit and Mediterranean herbs is warm and penetrating, the flavors firm, well defined, and long, again with the bracing acidity which is something of the signature of these wines. Drink: 2005-2015."Wine Advocate 88 points

Ornellaia Le Serre Nuove 2007 Product #23033 (In Stock)

"The just-bottled 2007 Le Serre Nuove opens with sweet scents of mocha, berries, spices and flowers that lead to a soft, seamless expression of fruit. This is an accessible, silky-textured Serre Nuove to enjoy while the 2006 rests in the cellar. It is an unusually harmonious, refined wine that is sure to deliver much pleasure over the coming years. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2022." Wine Advocate 92 points

"Really dark in color, with tar and licorice aromas and hints of raisin. Full-bodied, with soft, velvety tannins and an attractive finish. Fruity and polished. The second wine of Ornellaia. Fontodi Vin Santo 2001 (375ml) Product #23109 (In Stock)
Fontodi Vin Santo 2001 (375ml) Fontodi Vin Santo 2001 (375ml)

Fontodi always makes one of Tuscany's very best Vin Santo wines, and the 2001 may be the best yet.  Proprietor makes Vin Santo for the family and releases just a little to the market.  Nutty and complex, a perfect wine to drink cool after dinner (or before!).

"Tea leaves, prunes, burnt sugar, figs and spice cake are some of the nuances that emerge from Fontodi’s 2001 Vin Santo, a wine that walks a line between the fresher and more exotic expressions of this famous Tuscan dessert wine. The finish is long and creamy. There is gorgeous weight here, but the wine comes across as well balanced and not excessively heavy or ponderous. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2016."Wine Advocate 92 points

Fontodi Flaccianello Della Pieve Toscana 2007 Product #23108 (In Stock)
Fontodi Flaccianello Della Pieve Toscana 2007 Fontodi Flaccianello Della Pieve Toscana 2007

Another great vintage for one of Italy's greatest 100% Sangiovese wines. The nearly perfect 2007 growing season produced a deep, dark, super-rich, Flaccianello that still manages to be more accessible and open than the more muscular 2006.  You can get your arms around this wine now with about 30 minutes in decanter, but it'll get better with 5 years in the cellar.  Wine Advocate's 96 point score matches its rating for the 2006.  Wine Spectator scored the 2006 99 points and made it the #8 Wine of the Year.  How high can the 2007go?

"This is another set of beautiful wines from Fontodi and proprietor Giovanni Manetti. Fontodi’s 2007s have slightly lower acidities than the firmer 2006s, which makes them a touch more approachable and forward at this stage. That said, relative to most 2007 Tuscan reds these are powerful, rich wines (Flaccianello in particular) that will benefit from some additional time in bottle. A maniacal attention to detail in both the vineyards and cellar sets Fontodi apart as one of Italy’s most inspired producers. I tasted the 2007 Flaccianello a number of times from barrel and tank before it was bottled a few months ago. The 2007 is a bold, extroverted Flaccianello that sweeps across the palate with sensual layers of candied cherries, violets, spices and minerals. Dark, mentholated notes develop in the glass, adding further dimensions of inner sweetness, weight and complexity to this Tuscan thoroughbred. While so many 2007s are forward and open, Flaccianello remains muscular, taut and in need of significant cellaring. Still, the round, enveloping finish augurs extremely well for the future. Flaccianello is a selection of the estate’s finest Sangiovese and is aged in French oak. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2032."Wine Advocate 96 points

Fontodi Flaccianello Della Pieve Toscana 2006 Product #21918 (In Stock)
Fontodi Flaccianello Della Pieve Toscana 2006 Fontodi Flaccianello Della Pieve Toscana 2006

#8 on Wine Spectator's 2009 Top 100!

Fontodi introduced its “Super-Tuscan” Flaccianello in 1991 to show just how good a 100% Sangiovese wine from the hills of Chianti could be.  Now that the rules have changed to allow an all-Sangiovese wine to be labeled “Chianti,” Giovanni Manetti has elected to retain the Flaccianello name and Vino da Tavola status. This is the highest score awarded by Wine Advocate to any Sangiovese from the 2006 vintage!

“The 2006 Flaccianello della Pieve (Sangiovese) is just as extraordinary as it was when I tasted it from barrel. This spectacularly ripe and concentrated wine reveals masses of dark cherries, plums, licorice, smoke, violets, French oak and minerals that coat the palate with extraordinary richness. The wine possesses plenty of structure, but the sheer density of the fruit provides stunning balance. The 2006 Flaccianello is one of the more primary wines of the vintage, and it will require considerable patience. Flaccianello continues to prove that Panzano’s Conca d’Oro is one of the most privileged spots for Sangiovese in Tuscany.”Wine Advocate 96 points

"Shows excellent color and richness for a Sangiovese, with aromas of sultana, coffee, toasty oak and vanilla bean. Full-bodied, with masses of fruit and chewy tannins. The concentration and depth of fruit and layers of tannins leave me speechless. A blockbuster. Best after 2014"Wine Spectator 99 points
