The wine opens with complex aromas of ripe raspberry and black cherry, fresh turned earth, and a bit of oak toast. The flavors are dark and ripe with notes of earth, and smoke and a bit of minerality hidden down deep. The wine finishes long and sweet with the tannin and acidity balanced perfectly. There’s plenty of concentrated ripeness here, but the overall impression is of elegance, purity, and focus. You’ll happily enjoy this tonight on its own or with food, but it would be a shame to not set some aside and watch it develop for a decade or more.
“Owner-winemaker Jay Somers is easily one of Oregon's best winemakers. Although mighty tasty now, this wine is assuredly structured for the long haul and will likely improve if stored in a cool space for upward of a decade, should you be so inclined. Worth noting is that this is also a classic "get it while you can" bottling, as J. Christopher pinots do have a following and the production is relatively small (1,275 cases of this wine).” - Matt Kramer, The Oregonian, June 15, 2010
